Power cast down in gentle sorrow. Serenity in the hope of a world yet to come. A world outside the restricting frame of unseeing. These words above are written in response to the sculpture.by Dr R Coopey and the title for this piece comes from Robert Burns poem The Slave’s Lament. Burns himself, the paragon of equality and human rights, through his poetry, could see to the twisted heart of slavery, yet at that same time could not see. Even he could not see beyond the boundaries so deeply embedded in this system of wrongs.)

Venice depicted in glitched mixed viewpoint prospective form showing repeated upward patterns within the sky. It is a comment on the lack of effort for protection against rising sea levels The title Aqua Altered parodies the acqua alta phenomenon, in which Venice is frequently flooded by rising tides. The work also functions as an “angry diary,” reflecting my frustration that the city could be saved, yet ongoing corruption has prevented meaningful action, with aid funds instead being spent on luxury goods. As the work continues to develop, I plan to add further layers of detail, including repeated cut-out ocean surfaces rising throughout the composition.

A young gorilla is shown against a solid black background, its figure emerging clearly from the darkness. Soft pastel and pastel pencil have been used to build the form with controlled layers of grey, brown, and muted blue tones. The fur is defined with a mix of broad soft pastel shading and sharper pastel pencil lines, giving the coat a realistic texture without overwhelming detail. The gorilla’s posture suggests quiet thought. Its head is slightly lowered, eyes are looking into the distance, and one hand rests on the other in reflective gesture. The lighting is subtle, highlighting the contours of the face, shoulders, and hands while leaving the rest of the body gently subdued. The black background removes any sense of environment, keeping the focus entirely on the animal. This contrast makes the gorilla stand out clearly and emphasizes the calm, introspective mood of the piece. Soft Pastel and Pastel Pencils

This soft pastel and pastel pencil painting captures a chestnut horse mid expression, lifting his top lip in a playful, almost laughing gesture. The warm chestnut tones of the coat are built up in layered pastel, giving the fur a natural sheen and showing the subtle shifts of colour across the face and neck. Fine pastel pencil work defines the muzzle, whiskers, and the creases formed by the raised lip. The horse’s eye is alert and bright, adding to the sense of personality in the pose. The lifted lip exposes the teeth and gums in a way that feels humorous and familiar to anyone who knows horses well. The textures around the nostrils and mouth are carefully rendered, emphasising the stretch and movement of the expression. Overall, the painting focuses on character and moment, capturing a horse caught in a spontaneous, light hearted gesture that invites the viewer to share the joke.

Gilded Vase

This naive style patterned still life is made of collage layers, mono printing, acrylic paint, acrylic inks and gold leaf. The underpainting was created first, which then help to inform the composition. An outline drawing of the key elements was drawn on top using blind contour drawing to create a loose feel. I then made decisions about whether the background or the images would retain the patterned under painting or be painted out . I used printing techniques to enhance the surfaces further . The result is simple, 2D shapes with a strong but limited colour palette. My aim is to emphasize the negative spaces between items to help define them in space. I like the flowers to appear as if they are existing beyond the edges of the painting and not confined by it. I like the colours to sing hence the use of opposites like blue and orange. I am also looking to create some neutral tones so the painting doesn’t end up too busy and demanding for the eye.

The Sentinels

In a valley near Uppingham while sketching a landscape the two poplars caught my attention as Sentinels inviting entry to the path, and into the artwork itself, in addition to being guardians of the land. A rainbow hovers momentarily across the scene symbolic of the changeability of the future of the landscape and the threat to the Sentinels with climate change .In my work there is conversation between the panorama and the finer details within that, the “field furniture “ that speak of the land’s lived in reality and a sense of place. I painted this on natural flax the product of the land.

The tall green poplar trees called out to me for this work, and the misty Malvern Hills in the background. I used a gold primer on flax as a surface to paint on to give the glowing sense of morning light but painted over the gold with raw sienna opaque to enhance the brightness. Tucked into the trees is the farmhouse. The Welsh borderlands offer some dramatic landscapes. my son was married on the hill where I am standing.

A large number of transient white flowers rising and drifting against a hazy blue background, coming out of the originary confusion and sinking back into it, following the great respiratory alternation, breathing in and breathing out, that brings the world into existence. ‘The there-is and the there-is-not engender each other’. Lao Tzu “I made a large number of drawings with a fine nibbed permanent marker on dress-pattern tissue paper of small white Alpine flowers in the Botanical Garden in Cambridge. I then collaged the drawings onto canvas, adding acrylic and watercolour as the image emerged. Aspects of the printed dress-pattern tissue paper - fragments of words, lines, numbers - were subtly incorporated into the painting”

This painting captures a summer’s day at the zoo in Paignton, Devon. The scene is loosely interpreted, with forms simplified into bold patches of colour and shape, giving it a collage-like, semi-abstract quality. I used a combination of brushes and a palette knife throughout. Working with a palette knife limits precision, but that lack of control often leads to unexpected and pleasing textures and marks. The process felt playful and spontaneous, making it an especially enjoyable to paint.

Working from a still life set up in my studio, flowers and a hidden deer arranged and observed, then painted intuitively, each layer a small discovery. The deer is present but asks you to look, half-emerged from the flowers and the marks of the world around it. The work sits somewhere between figurative and abstract, loose enough to breathe but figurative enough to see. There is always room to find your own feeling in it.

Doto, Nereid of giving safe voyage

Nereids are mythological Greek creatures who protect those in, or on, the sea. Doto is the Nereid of safe voyage. Starting with my photograph of the beach, I digitally drew a nereid onto it, before printing onto sustainable bamboo paper. I embroidered parts of the image, and used geo textiles and other debris found on the same beach to create clothes and hair for Doto, The debris falls onto the beach during coastal erosion. In my image, Doto is sitting in a boat wreck which was uncovered on the ebach in Pakefield in Suffolk. No AI.

Inspired by Swallow Falls, North Wales I usually paint directly from nature, but this painting was inspired by an old photo, taken over 30 years ago whilst walking in North Wales with my father. Even though it was many years ago, i remembered the day well and the sight of the water cascading down the hillside after heavy rainfall and I wanted to capture that freefall of water. My Dad had encouraged me to join his mountaineering club, and we shared a love of the mountains and wild places. He died over 20 years ago, so the old photo holds a treasured memory of our walks together. "Cascading" was selected earlier this year as part of the CASE (Coventry Art Societies Exhibition) at the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry as I only recently moved from Warwickshire to West Northamptonshire.

This piece is one of a series that I made using mono screen print as the stimulus. Born of chance happenings, during the process I began to see a narrative of risk. Oddly the darkness did not feel like a sense of menace to me, in contrast there was something serene about it but the lure of the crimson seemed a place I wanted to be but would also take me out of my comfort zone. It might lead to satisfaction, achievement, joy or conversely disappointment, failure, embarrassment. I wondered if I would decide to take that leap of faith. The older I get the more I hope so.

This uplifting, lyrical painting was inspired by the landscapes that have been shaped by natural forces. Richly textural layers of acrylic paint, inks, pastels and gelli printed collage pieces create a tactile surface of abstract marks evoking eroded rocks and limestone outcrops alongside the large foreground’s forceful, linear shapes reminiscent of organic forms or underground caves. I used a very limited colour palette of inky blues, chalky whites, ochres and earthy greens to emphasise these textural qualities and placed the horizon line very high to suggest a feeling of awe. Everything has evolved from the weathered rock – the stone walls, houses and angular trees – going right up into the distant hills – like echoes.

Across cultures and generations this refusal to recognize our shared humanity divides us and gives rise to violence, oppression, tyranny, and war.

“Footprints “ tells the story of a place I’ve returned to time and again- a cove along the Jurassic coast, where sunlit rocks and tide- filled pools once amused my childhood adventures. Years later, on a summer day, I found myself there again, the ancient rock formations and recognisable pools still inspiring me. This painting is a blend of past and present- warm pink and orange hues reflect the heat of the sun on ancient stone, while soft sea blues and shadowed pools add intrigue and movement.

Walled Garden, Boughton House

Earlier this year I was invited to paint in the gardens of Boughton House during their Easter Opening. I enjoy working plein air and the pressure of working in public with whatever the weather brings. We enjoyed the tail end of a storm that day with very high winds. It was spring and the blossoms had only just started emerging on the trees. I wanted to capture this and the joy of intermittent sunshine. The majority of this artwork was created plein air in watercolour on pre stretched cotton paper. I don’t draw the composition but let the layers of watercolour glazes build up the scene. I use a limited palette to help keep colours vibrant and connected. To avoid too much detail I intentionally worked with a large round brush until I returned to the studio to add some final details.

This work draws inspiration from the quiet magic of a summer evening as daylight begins to fade behind the hills. Bathed in warm golden light, the landscape settles into a moment of stillness while deer move softly along the hedgerows, bringing a subtle sense of movement and presence to the scene. Using layered acrylic techniques, I developed a palette of muted glowing tones to reflect the hazy warmth and tranquillity of dusk. The painting explores atmosphere and memory, aiming to capture not only the appearance of the landscape, but also the emotional calm that these fleeting moments in nature can hold.

The Garden, Nevill Holt Festival

Last summer I was invited to paint in the gardens of the Nevill Holt Festival. I enjoy working plein air and the pressure of working in public really helps to focus the mind. The gardens were beautiful and the day hot. I wanted to capture the vast height of the borders dwarfing the visitors. The majority of this artwork was created plein air on pre stretched cotton paper. I didn’t draw the composition but let the layers of watercolour glazes build up the scene quickly. I use a limited palette to help keep colours vibrant and connected. To avoid too much detail I intentionally worked with a large round brush until I returned to the studio to add some final details and highlights in acrylic ink.

Labyrinth III is made of air drying clay 'Paperclay' sculpted over a wire support. The sculpture is an interpretation of Ariadne Myth that guides through inner and outer labyrinths. Holding a small ball of wool, the figure symbolizes memory, emotion and human connections.

'Lilian -the bobbed-haired bandit' was inspired by the story of Lilian Goldstein. Lilian started her crime 'career' in the 1920s as a getaway driver but was soon organising her own audacious robberies. She outsmarted police with detectives describing her as 'a very spunky girl.' Lilian is part of my series of artworks seeking to depict the often messy lives of female criminals through history. In contrast with men, women who come to the attention of the press are often described by their appearance. How much has really changed over the last century?
