On Canvas, acrylics and collection of papers are created to bring about a joyous feeling of celebrating summer. I enjoy being by the sea, swimming and sometimes on the water but always it great to be out afterwards and enjoy drinking and relaxing. In this painting I wanted the observer to feel the warmth as they too sat relaxed, enjoying a lazy day.

A Lady of Honour

The painting depicts a 17th-century lady riding aside, wearing a riding habit influenced by a French design of the period. The name of the painting is inspired by a 1666 diary entry of Samuel Pepys, where he writes: 'Walking here in the galleries I find the Ladies of Honour dressed in their riding garbs, with coats and doublets with deep skirts, just for all the world like mine, and buttoned their doublets up the breast, with perriwigs and with hats; so that, only for a long petticoat dragging under their men’s coats, nobody could take them for women in any point whatever...'

This piece is one of a series that I made using mono screen print as the stimulus. Born of chance happenings, during the process I began to see a narrative of risk. Oddly the darkness did not feel like a sense of menace to me, in contrast there was something serene about it but the lure of the crimson seemed a place I wanted to be but would also take me out of my comfort zone. It might lead to satisfaction, achievement, joy or conversely disappointment, failure, embarrassment. I wondered if I would decide to take that leap of faith. The older I get the more I hope so.

This original alabaster sculpture 'Mother' from which 'She' was created, is a reimagining of ancient sculptures of the Divine Feminine, drawing on many different forms of this archetype as mother, goddess, creator, nourisher and fertile earth force that appear across cultures and civilisations. References include the Venus of Willendorf, Venus of Hohle Fels, Ishtar, Isis, Hathor, Minoan Snake Goddess etc. Central to this body of work is my belief that consciousness, understood as the life force energy, exists not only in matter but also within empty space and connects everything. It is seen as an animate presence that creates our world in a symbiotic relationship with All. My work is an ongoing exploration of how sculpture carves into space thereby affecting consciousness, changing it forever.

Doto, Nereid of giving safe voyage

Nereids are mythological Greek creatures who protect those in, or on, the sea. Doto is the Nereid of safe voyage. Starting with my photograph of the beach, I digitally drew a nereid onto it, before printing onto sustainable bamboo paper. I embroidered parts of the image, and used geo textiles and other debris found on the same beach to create clothes and hair for Doto, The debris falls onto the beach during coastal erosion. In my image, Doto is sitting in a boat wreck which was uncovered on the ebach in Pakefield in Suffolk. No AI.

Inspired by Swallow Falls, North Wales I usually paint directly from nature, but this painting was inspired by an old photo, taken over 30 years ago whilst walking in North Wales with my father. Even though it was many years ago, i remembered the day well and the sight of the water cascading down the hillside after heavy rainfall and I wanted to capture that freefall of water. My Dad had encouraged me to join his mountaineering club, and we shared a love of the mountains and wild places. He died over 20 years ago, so the old photo holds a treasured memory of our walks together. "Cascading" was selected earlier this year as part of the CASE (Coventry Art Societies Exhibition) at the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry as I only recently moved from Warwickshire to West Northamptonshire.

Burns himself, the paragon of equality and human rights, through his poetry, could see to the twisted heart of slavery, yet at that same time could not see. Even he could not see beyond the boundaries so deeply embedded in this system of wrongs.)

I am a children's book/greetings card/live sketch Illustrator by day......but by night, I seek out, "on their last legs" dictionaries to illustrate on, rescuing them from skips, charity shops and landfill. I work very much with sustainability in mind and just love to give these beautiful old books (and accompanying words!) a new lease of life beginning a new story. I hope this piece makes you smile.

This naive style patterned still life is made of collage layers, mono printing, acrylic paint, acrylic inks and gold leaf. The underpainting was created first, which then help to inform the composition. An outline drawing of the key elements was drawn on top using blind contour drawing to create a loose feel. I then made decisions about whether the background or the images would retain the patterned under painting or be painted out . I used printing techniques to enhance the surfaces further . The result is simple, 2D shapes with a strong but limited colour palette. My aim is to emphasize the negative spaces between items to help define them in space. I like the flowers to appear as if they are existing beyond the edges of the painting and not confined by it. I like the colours to sing hence the use of opposites like blue and orange. I am also looking to create some neutral tones so the painting doesn’t end up too busy and demanding for the eye.

'Lilian -the bobbed-haired bandit' was inspired by the story of Lilian Goldstein. Lilian started her crime 'career' in the 1920s as a getaway driver but was soon organising her own audacious robberies. She outsmarted police with detectives describing her as 'a very spunky girl.' Lilian is part of my series of artworks seeking to depict the often messy lives of female criminals through history. In contrast with men, women who come to the attention of the press are often described by their appearance. How much has really changed over the last century?

I often find myself drawn to this moment—where the sea meets the land, where everything feels both grounded and in motion. This piece comes from that feeling. The turquoise water opens out like a space to breathe, while the sand holds something warmer, more familiar, almost like a memory of place. The white foam moves between them, arriving and disappearing, like a quiet conversation that never fully settles. Having lived between countries, I recognise this shoreline as more than a place—it feels like a state of being. Always arriving, always leaving, never entirely one or the other. The marks and textures carry traces of that movement, like something just passed through. For me, this is where I pause. Somewhere gentle, shifting, and uncertain—yet deeply calm. A place that doesn’t ask me to choose, but simply to exist in between.

Working from a still life set up in my studio, flowers and a hidden deer arranged and observed, then painted intuitively, each layer a small discovery. The deer is present but asks you to look, half-emerged from the flowers and the marks of the world around it. The work sits somewhere between figurative and abstract, loose enough to breathe but figurative enough to see. There is always room to find your own feeling in it.

Tuscan Sunset is a large, highly textural work built up from mulberry bark and recycled fabrics worked into a weatherproof hardening material and them painted up with outdoor paints. The base of the work is marine plywood, the frame is made from recycled plastics and all materials have been tested for several years outside to ensure durability. I have pushed the limitations of the materials to create a work that conveys the geology of the stunning Tuscan landscape and atmospheric heat and light that plays over it as the sun sets.

Capturing the light and depth of landscape reflections is at the core of my artistic practice. I alway go back to the hidden, ofter overlooked pockets of nature where light meets water and the mysterious depths of the lakes and waterways reveal the trees and riverbank. I use oil painting as well as process techniques to try to capture the sunlight as it dapples and dances over the water surface and the tree reflections in the depths of the water. Where rain falls while the sun is shining – in this case, a sunset, but I loved this Japanese folk belief that Kitsune is a supernatural event where foxes, magical beings known for shape-shifting, hold secret wedding ceremonies during a sunshower to prevent us from witnessing their celebrations.

This painting captures a summer’s day at the zoo in Paignton, Devon. The scene is loosely interpreted, with forms simplified into bold patches of colour and shape, giving it a collage-like, semi-abstract quality. The tall green poplar trees called out to me for this work, and the misty Malvern Hills in the background. I used a gold primer on flax as a surface to paint on to give the glowing sense of morning light but painted over the gold with raw sienna opaque to enhance the brightness. Tucked into the trees is the farmhouse. The Welsh borderlands offer some dramatic landscapes. my son was married on the hill where I am standing.

The Sentinels

In a valley near Uppingham while sketching a landscape the two poplars caught my attention as Sentinels inviting entry to the path, and into the artwork itself, in addition to being guardians of the land. A rainbow hovers momentarily across the scene symbolic of the changeability of the future of the landscape and the threat to the Sentinels with climate change .In my work there is conversation between the panorama and the finer details within that, the “field furniture “ that speak of the land’s lived in reality and a sense of place. I painted this on natural flax the product of the land.
